Ink and Bone

This is a tough one to rate! I feel like it had HUGE potential but just missed the mark. The story was great! I felt like it was not completely original but had a bit of a modern feel to it. A connection between grandmother and granddaughter with psychic abilities, working to find a missing child. An ex-cop turned investigator. Unrequited (or sometimes unrequited) love. Distraught parent who will do anything to find her child… you know…the usual but with tattoos ghosts added.

Anyway, the story was good but it was ALL over the place and I never really felt like everything came together in the end. Maybe it’s a setup for a series??? I just think there was too much going on, too many characters that didn’t go anywhere. Too much fluff! At times I had trouble even figuring out who was talking.

I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Just published on June 6th this book is available for kindle on amazon. It currently has 4.18 stars on goodreads, as of this writing.  I gave it 3 stars!

The Ocean at the End of the Lane

I can’t believe that it’s been almost a month since I read this book and I still haven’t written a review for it! That’s pretty unlike me! I really enjoyed this book. Probably more than I thought that would. I have been wanting to read a book by Neil Gaiman for quite some time but to be honest the SciFi/Fantasy genre scares me a little bit! But, so many people sing his praises and who am I to shy away from a genre??? This one was on sale and you know I can’t pass up a good bargain, so there you have it, my first Neil Gaimnan book!

So, I am not even really sure where to begin. This is sort of a magical, haunting, and mysterious story and it is written beautifully! If all of his books are written like this…sign me up for the fan club! The story is wild and wicked and reminds me of The Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland…you know what I mean? Sort of fantastical and splendid.

I can say without a doubt that I will try another of his book. This isn’t a genre that I think I can wrap myself up in for months but I feel like it’s certainly a good change of pace!

Currently on goodreads this book has 3.98 stars which is right in line with the 4 stars that I gave it!

You can get it for your kindle today on amazon!

I’m thinking this would be awesome on audible!!  Give it a try as one of your TWO free audio books by clicking on the this link!

Orphan Train

I think that this is one of the best books I have read in the past couple of years. I would have to go back and look at what I’ve read to be sure, but really, does it matter? This is a great book! I flew through it, didn’t want it to end and thought it was just beautiful!

The story alternates between a woman, Vivian, who is now 91 years old and a girl, Molly, who is 17. Both of them have been in foster care and their stories intertwine, both literally and figuratively. Vivian’s story is told through her eyes as a child and as an elderly woman and we see how Vivian and Molly meet and how they form a bond. It is a truly lovely story!

I would recommend this to anyone but especially anyone who relates to an orphan, a foster child, adopted child, living through WWII, immigration in the early part of the 20th century, being Irish. I think anyone can find something in this book that they can relate to. Give it a read!

I gave it 5 stars!  Currently on goodreads it has 4.11 stars and right now you can order it on amazon for kindle and paperback for under $10!

Looking Good Dead

I’m starting to like this guy, Peter James! He has entertained me once more! He writes a good mystery and his lead character in this series, Roy Grace, really came to life in this second book. I felt he was a little underwritten in the first book but as I read the second in the series I really started to feel as if I knew him!
There was ONE thing that I really didn’t like in this book! Repetition from the first book in the series. I don’t just mean that the author retold information that was in the first book, I mean he actually word-for-word repeated himself (plagiarized himself???) in this book! The description of Roy’s office, for instance. OK, I read in the first book what was in it, the big clock from a movie, the fish under it. I guess you could tell us this again…not sure really why, but I guess. Just don’t copy and paste it from the last book!
Rant over!
So this one is about a guy who finds a CD on a train and decides to see what’s on it before giving it to “lost and found”. Oh boy, he shouldn’t have done that!!! Bad news on that CD and it starts a chain of events that is pretty horrifying! Roy Grace and his team investigate and chase down leads to find the culprit and chase they do!
On a side note…Peter James has some kind of weird thing with pubic hair! I think I know what the pubic hair of every character in these two books looks like….that’s just strange! It’s not done in a vulgar manner, but just matter-of-factly. Maybe it’s a man thing??? Anyway, I thought I’d just throw that out there!

So, as of this writing it’s on sale on amazon for kindle for $2.51!!  Strange price for a strange man?  Not sure how long that will last but I would snatch it up if I were you! 🙂

If you missed the first one it’s called Dead Simple and that one’s on sale too!  Just $1.99 right now on amazon for kindle!  Great plot!!!

It has 4.06 stars on goodreads right now.  Not too Shabby!

And I have to give a shout out to my girls at Crime Time Podcast for recommending Peter James!  Check them out!  You will love their show!

Pines (Wayward Pines #1)

How do you describe a book that you liked but didn’t love but are quite willing to read the next in the series to see what happens???

It starts out with an Secret Service agent waking up with amnesia after a car accident in an unfamiliar place. As time passes he starts to remember bits and pieces of his life and what he is there for. So, right off, this is good! Right? I mean, it’s amnesia! You can’t go wrong there!

Without going deeper into what happens, I will just say that there are twists and turns and I really wanted to know what was going to happen. So that sounds all kinds of 4 or 5 star right? Well, that’s the problem. I just feel more like 3 or 4 stars. Honestly, I think it’s because the end just got a little too far fetched for me.

I don’t want to give too much away so I will just say that I gave it four stars, leaning toward 3 stars but not leaning so much that I won’t read the next in the series…and maybe check out the TV show when I’m done!

It’s on sale for kindle on amazon as of this writing for just $3.99.  Totally worth it!

Rated 3.86 stars on goodreads.

Dead Simple

dead simple

This is quite possibly the most original creepy plot I have ever seen!! Oh Peter James!! You are one sick man! I love it!

Seriously! I was hooked from the start. This author was recommended to me by my favorite podcasters, Lee & Eddie! I gave this one a shot because it was the first in a series and Lee & Eddie will totally understand why that is funny!

It starts out with a group of guys out bar hopping for a bachelor party. The soon to be grrom is a prankster and his friends are determined to get their revenge!  The prank they pull goes terribly wrong and you won’t even believe what happens! It kept me reading and on the edge of my seat! Twists, turns, suspicions, good grief! Honestly the only real critique I have is that the main character, Roy Grace, the star of the series, is a little underdeveloped. I didn’t feel that much of a connection to him. But, hey, we can’t all be perfect!

Read it! It’s a good one! Solid four stars!

It has 3.99 stars on goodreads and as of this writing, you can get it for kindle on amazon for only $1.99!!!
